Multiple smile imperfections can be addressed at the same time with porcelain veneers. Veneers are a thin shell of tooth-colored porcelain that fits over the front of the patient’s existing teeth. If the patient’s teeth are crooked, veneers will help them to look straighter. If the teeth are stained or yellowed, veneers will help them to appear whiter and brighter. If there are gaps or chips, veneers will fill the space.
First, Dr. Nealis will scrape some enamel from your teeth to make room for the porcelain veneers to fit over the tooth and into the space allowed by the neighboring teeth. Next, an etching solution will be applied to the teeth to ensure proper bonding takes place. Third, a strong bonding agent will be placed onto the teeth and the porcelain veneer put into place. Finally, a specialized light will help the cement cure.
Veneers are applied to the front teeth as a way to improve the patient’s smile. Dr. Nealis will use a color chart to ensure the veneers complement the patient’s molars in color. Dr. Nealis will also take impressions of the patient’s teeth so the veneers are the right size, shape and width. The patient’s improved smile will look completely natural, only better.
With proper care and good oral hygiene, veneers can last many years. It is very important to brush and floss daily and to make regular visits to the dentist for checkups and professional cleanings.
You can eat just about anything with veneers, but remember that porcelain is like glass and will shatter if bent. Avoid foods that apply a twisting motion to your teeth as this could break your veneers. Also, if you grind your teeth at night, wear a night guard to protect your veneers.
