During an exam, the dentist and a licensed dental hygienist will assess the patient’s teeth for tarter buildup and check for gum disease by inserting a probe between and under the gum line. The process isn't painful, and it provides useful information about the health of the patient’s mouth. The hygienist will also scrape away any tarter that's built up on the teeth and clean them with a polisher during the check up. X-rays may also be taken so Dr. Nealis can have a better picture of what's going on inside the teeth and gums.
Without regular cleanings, serious health problems like gingivitis, periodontal disease and even heart disease can develop undetected. Dr. Nealis provides professional cleanings which the American Dental Association recommends all children and adults receive twice a year. Some people may need more frequent cleanings. Dr. Nealis may recommend a patient to have more frequent cleanings if he or she has significant tartar buildup or gum disease.
When applied correctly, sealants are 100 percent effective in preventing cavities. As long as the sealants are in place, tiny particles of food can not reach the pits and grooves in a tooth. Food and bacteria are difficult to dislodge from these deep crevices so tooth decay can set up quickly which causes cavities. Sealants usually last a few years before they must be reapplied. The condition of your sealants will be checked during a routine exam and cleaning.
Sealants are easy for Dr. Nealis to apply. The patient’s teeth will be cleaned and a special solution applied. The solution serves to roughen the chewing surfaces of the teeth so the sealant will adhere. The sealant is then painted onto the tooth's chewing surface. A specialized light is used to cure or harden the sealant into place. The treatment is painless and takes only a few minutes.
